The Temptations of the Russian River

Its always tempting when you are at a Russian River vacation rental to do nothing.

This envoirment is so tranquil, it sometimes is better appreciated by relaxing. Although the River’s Redwoods remind you of the Sierra’s, the temperatures and climate are entirely different. The spring temperatures have been in the 70′s and somedays its been like summer. And since it is Spring, the colors are vivid this time of year.

Last weekend was perfect weather and an ideal time for the temptations of a nearby drive.

I had an easy going guest, and although we enjoyed quiet time around the Elements and decided to watch the sunset from the nearby beach, Goat Rock Beach. It is about a 14 minute drive from the property, and a stunning way to see how the Russian River, flows into the Pacific. All along the drive down River Road, you get great glimpses of the river, as it enters into the broad tidal basin. There are pasturelands, and endless views. Nathan, Oliver and I enjoyed a long walk, with almost no company.

It was a fantastic afternoon, even though the conversations were subdued, the ocean did most of the talking. We had to stay on the dog-friendly section, but the other part of the beach reaches back to where the Russian River and the Pacific meet. And at the right time of the year, the sea lions have a big colony down there.

I have been to River’s End before, and its a big favorite, though not unexpensive. But the mythical view from their dining room, seem to make those thing inconsequential. We spent the sunset, eating several small plates, fresh oysters, and a nice bottle of sonoma county sauvignon blanc; and watched the sun fade into the Pacific Ocean.

The Russian River area offers so many relaxing getaways like a trip to the beach. Although I really like the relaxing atmosphere, I also enjoy the easy side trips, whether its to a winery, or the beach.
