You really need sun glasses for a drive around the Russian River area.
The bright sun, along with the vivid greens create a startling contrast, that sometimes is so intense it glares. Its all that green growth of Spring coming of age, and of course our recent good weather has really made the colors deepen.
The Spring Farm Trails opened with a great event in April.
This is a great time of year and I often use their maps, to find new sources of locally grown foods. Since their website literally organizes all the different farms by location, and by food, you can craft your own tour. I know everyone enjoyed the “Open Trails” earlier in Spring.
Although its May, its probably the right time to start thinking about the Healdsburg Jazz Festival.
As the JazzTimes says, “The names scroll out like a wishlist”, which includes Charlie Haden, Esperanza Spalding, and Jazon Moran. The Healdsburg Jazz Fesitval is over a week long, and really has a lot of exciting afternoons. Its another one of those day trips that really add to a Russian River getaway. Nearby in June is another “local” event, the Russian River Rodeo. Its held once a year at Duncan’s Mills, and really has all the charm of a down home rodeo. The local kids ride, and our nearby horsemen show up. Its a completely charming way to spend the afternoon and help the local community. Their website has some great pictures from last year.
June is also a great time to start enjoying the Farmers Market in Occidental. Its Friday night, and even though you can eat right at the market, I often eat at two local favorites. The Union Hotel always has this Italian home feel, when you walk in the door. If you eat there more than twice, they will remember your name, and treat you like family. I always like taking a small group from the market to the Union, they always have room since they have large dining areas I have also eaten at Bistro des copains, which offers some of the best cuisine in the area. Their dishes are always original, and recently I read another great review on them in the sonoma county gazaette.
This is a great time of year to spend in Sonoma County and the Russian River. A Russian River vacation for a week really gives you a chance to savor a lot of different events, every month.
